Nigerian Army declares for democracy

The head of Nigeria's Army has pledged his commitment to protecting democracy and advised officers to remain committed to its sustenance.

Chief of Army Staff Lt-Gen.Azubuike Ihejirika was speaking at a workshop at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, in Rukuba, Plateau State on Monday.

Gen.Ihejirika pledged the commitment of the army to contribute meaningfully to the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria and affirms its commitment to its constitutional responsibilities.

Gen.Ihejirika said: “The workshop with the theme Repositioning the Commanding Officers to Meet Contemporary Challenges was designed to brainstorm on contemporary issues relating to their operations.
According to the COAS, “The challenge posed by internal security problems like ethno-religious upheavals, armed banditry, kidnapping and others has made the involvement of the army imperative and they must rise to the occasion – in line with their constitutional responsibilities.”

As the April elections approaches all eyes will be on the army to see its role before and after the election.
